Experience Salzburg Differently – Canyoning & Rafting as a Full-Day Adventure

A trip to the Salzburg region is often associated with mountains, lakes, and scenic views. Exploring nature on walks or hikes is a classic. But if you want to experience Salzburg in a different way, you can take a much more active approach – with canyoning in the gorges and rafting on the wild waters of the Salzach.

This full-day tour combines exactly that: a full day outdoors, starting in the gorges and continuing on the river. Two experiences that show Salzburg is much more than just a postcard-perfect destination.

Canyoning in the Gorges – Your Start into the Adventure

The day begins at the basecamp in Golling. After picking up your equipment and a short briefing, you head straight to the Almbach Gorge. Moving through the canyon means constantly adapting to the terrain: jumping, sliding, swimming – the route decides your path.

Jumps between around 1.5 and 8 meters are possible, but never mandatory. If you’re not comfortable jumping, you can simply abseil instead.

This flexibility is what makes canyoning in Salzburg so accessible: you decide how much action you want, while the gorge leads you through one of the region’s most impressive natural landscapes.

Take a Break – Lunch at the Torrenerhof

After your morning in the gorges, you return to the Torrenerhof for a well-deserved break. A typical Austrian lunch awaits – schnitzel or, as a vegetarian option, Kasnockerl – giving you the energy you need for the afternoon.

This break is part of the experience and offers time to relax before the second half of the day, where things get even more exciting – in the wild water.

Rafting on the Salzach – When the River Takes Over

In the afternoon, it’s time to head to the Salzach. After gearing up and receiving a safety briefing, you begin your rafting adventure. The first stretches are calmer, helping you get used to the boat, the commands, and the flow of the river.

As you continue, the water becomes more dynamic. Waves, currents, and sections like the “Labyrinth” demand focus and teamwork. In between, calmer stretches – such as near the Gasteiner Ache – offer short moments to catch your breath before the next splash-filled sections begin.

One Full Day in Salzburg – Gorges and White Water Combined

This full-day experience brings together canyoning in the gorges and rafting on the Salzach – two different perspectives on the same region, both active and outdoors.

If you’re looking to experience Salzburg in a different way, this is exactly that: a full day of movement, water, and nature.
