Wild Alpine chamoises in the middle of the city: The steep walls of the Kapuzinerberg
Hardly anyone believes it until he sees it with his own eyes: On the forested Kapuzinerberg lives for decades a colony of completely wild chamois in the middle of the city of Salzburg. The shy climbing artists use the inaccessible, vertically breaking rock crashes on the north and east sides of the mountain as a protected habitat. While downtown traffic rolls, the animals graze undisturbed between rocky outcrops and trees.
Insider tip: The best chances for a sighting are in the early hours of the morning along the Basteiweg on the north face above the Schallmooser Hauptstraße. Pack binoculars or a telephoto lens and keep yourself absolutely calm.
