Those looking for the best view of the Hohensalzburg Fortress often pay expensive money for observation platforms or lifts. Instead, follow the hiking trail on the Mönchsrücken to the Bürgerwehr. The powerful weir complex with its four round towers from the 15th century. The century moves like a balcony over the city. From the wall projections you can see the fortress, the old town and the river at eye level, without being bumped into by travel groups.
Insider tip: Climb over the steep Müllner Schanze. The way through the old fortified gates is much more atmospheric than the concrete elevator in the mountain.
