Apple Strudel Experience – Salzburg Tradition You Can Make Yourself

“A day without strudel is like a night without stars in the sky” – this quote, attributed to Emperor Franz Joseph, illustrates quite well the importance of apple strudel in Austria to this day. Alongside Wiener Schnitzel, Kaiserschmarrn, and Sachertorte, apple strudel is one of the true classics of Austrian cuisine – a symbol of tradition, craftsmanship, and genuine enjoyment. Anyone who wants to experience Salzburg in a different way is exactly right in this apple strudel course, diving straight into this sweet tradition.

The origins of apple strudel go back a long way: one of the oldest known strudel recipes already appears in a handwritten cookbook from 1696. The paper-thin dough likely travelled via the Orient, the Ottoman Empire, and Hungary before arriving in Austria – and today it is an essential part of Salzburg’s and Austria’s pastry culture. This history becomes tangible in this workshop in Salzburg.

Baking together – your apple strudel workshop in Salzburg

In this baking course, you become a strudel expert step by step. Under the guidance of an experienced chef, you learn in the workshop how simple ingredients turn into a true classic. In small groups of 2 to 4 people, you work together – creating a cozy, almost family-like experience in Salzburg.

And here, it’s truly about doing it yourself rather than just watching. You marinate the apples, season them with cinnamon and sugar, and bring everything into perfect balance. The highlight of the workshop is the dough: it is stretched so thin you almost think it might float away. Then your homemade apple strudel goes into the oven, while its aroma slowly fills the entire room.

Salzburger Nockerl – sweet, airy, and homemade

While your apple strudel turns golden brown in the oven, the cooking class continues on a sweet note: you prepare your own Salzburger Nockerl. This famous specialty is simply part of Salzburg and is almost a culinary landmark of the city.

The best part: everything is made by hand. From whipping the mixture to shaping the typical “clouds,” you are fully involved. In this course, you don’t just create one dessert, but two – both freshly prepared by you and both giving you a very different, hands-on way to experience Salzburg.

Experience Salzburg differently – your moment of enjoyment

Before tasting your homemade sweets, you start with a hearty goulash soup. It provides the perfect balance and prevents a sugar rush.

Important: make sure you arrive hungry for the baking course. Because the goulash soup, followed by apple strudel and Salzburger Nockerl, is going to be quite filling.
